About the Practice

Hanham Health has a range of facilities. The main, purpose built surgery is large, airy, modern and well-furnished. The Oldland Common Surgery is located in a traditional large converted Victorian dwelling. Hanham is merging with the surgery at Almondsbury, which is also purpose-built and well-appointed.

Hanham Health also has functional and fully equipped premises in outlying sites in five prisons, two youth secure units, and one MOD site.

Hanham is big, well-resourced and active in many clinical sectors – but still small enough to allow people to really know each other.

The practice offers telephone triage at Hanham and Oldland surgeries and walk-in at Almondsbury. There are bespoke systems within prisons and secure units, dependent on security category. Appointments are pre-bookable with a named GP at the MOD site.

The dedicated team seeks out niche work such as its custodial portfolio, in which the team has developed a strong local and national reputation. The practices also offer minor surgery, DVT (at Almondsbury), and a physio on site.

The strong, experienced and engaged management team, together with a first-rate administration service, are capable of providing excellent support in community, custodial, youth secure and military settings.

Hanham Health is part of the 4 Practice Collaboration Council (4PCC) which also includes Cadbury Health, Kingswood and Close Farm surgeries.

Secure environment work

In addition to our community practice work, Hanham Health delivers GP services to HMP Eastwood Park (adult women’s prison), HMP Leyhill (adult male open prison) and HMPs Ashfield, Bristol and Erlestoke (adult male prisons). We also undertake primary care services at Vinney Green and Swanwick Lodge Secure Units for young persons. We have recently started to support the psychiatric and mental health team at Fromeside Medium Secure and Wickham Low Secure units at Blackberry Hill in developing and delivering a robust primary care service.

Our contracts with secure environments are an integral part of the organisation and the quality we aspire to achieve in general practice is fundamental to the services we provide to our patients within the secure settings. This is an area in which Hanham Health has a unique range of specialist expertise and experience to deliver quality services.

Working environment, values and culture

The team at Hanham Health set out to provide the best possible healthcare for patients, wherever they may be, while promoting better physical and mental health by offering a planned programme of health promotion and preventative care based on local and national guidelines.

The culture here is friendly, supportive, innovative and ambitious.

The practice has a clear focus on enabling frequent team meetings, practice executive team meetings, clinicians’ forums, Significant Event Audits (SEAs), and partnership board meetings.

An active social committee puts on an excellent, family-inclusive social programme.

What we offer

The practice offers variety of employment for those who want it, and traditional community practice for those who prefer that.

Hanham Health offers flexible working in the form of job share, part-time working and term-time only working.

Staff can also benefit from unpaid leave, paid maternity, paternity and adoption leave, carer’s leave and childcare voucher scheme.

The practice works with staff to make it easy for them to stay and thrive and this is reflected in excellent retention levels.

Learning and development

The practice offers a full buddy and mentoring scheme, generous study leave, and an in-house educational programme for clinicians.

Hanham also operates an in-house educational programme one Thursday every month.

New starters benefit from a comprehensive, two week induction.

Our patients

Hanham Health patients include older patients in community settings, and younger elsewhere, including in military and secure settings.

The practice has a good reputation with its patients. In the main surgeries, patient satisfaction has increased markedly since the introduction of telephone triage and full GP and nurse manning.
