Fireclay and Old School Surgery Primary Care Network (FOSS) are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking GP to join our team.

Main duties of the job

Conducting routine and urgent appointments, both face-to-face and via telephone, ensuring high-quality care.

Prescribing according to local and national guidelines.

Managing administrative tasks, such as letters, results, referrals, and emails, in a timely manner.

Making appropriate referrals and managing related admin.

Checking and signing repeat prescriptions to maintain care quality.

Providing cover for colleagues in emergencies, considering individual commitments.

Supporting Extended Hours services, enhancing patient access.

Collaborating with other health and social care providers to deliver integrated care.

Maintaining accurate consultation records using the EMIS clinical system.

Offering clinical support to colleagues, helping the team meet high standards in patient care and QOF/Enhanced Services targets.

This is a dynamic role that offers both patient care and team collaboration in a supportive environment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Newly qualified GP (within 2 years and not having had a substantive post) with full GMC registration and license to practice. Applicants must have current UK professional registration.

 

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in a GP training practice using EMIS
  • Experience of dealing with a range of clinical conditions
  • Experience of providing home visits
  • Experience of medicines management
  • Experience of QOF and clinical audit


Desirable criteria

  • Experience in triage.
  • Understanding of policy developments related to the delivery of primary care services including General Practice, the GMS contract, Clinical Governance, Network Contract DES and Quality and Outcomes Framework.
  • Knowledge of the health needs of the Primary Care Network population

 

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

  • Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice.
  • Understanding of evidence-based practice. Evidence of working autonomously, with some support and supervision.
  • Ability to effectively triage, assess and diagnose.
  • Requesting pathology tests and processing the results, advising patients accordingly.
  • Assessing and managing acute deteriorations/exacerbations of Long-Term Conditions.
  • Understands the importance of evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely.
  • Broad knowledge of clinical governance.
  • Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to refer to GPs.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including recording of accurate clinical notes.
  • Strong IT skills and competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Outlook. Effective time management (Planning, Organising and Prioritising), with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to listen and empathise whilst being honest and caring.
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure with and understanding of the audit process.

Clinical responsibilities:

  • In accordance with the practice rota, as agreed, the post-holder will be available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing/authorising repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health.
  • Providing counselling and health education.
  • Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate.
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
  • Collecting data for audit purposes.
  • Expectation to complete a mandatory induction.
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions.
  • Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
  • The post-holder will be required to visit patients during surgery time in an emergency if clinically indicated.
  • The post-holder will undertake a fair percentage of enhanced access sessions as allocated on the network rota.

 

Communication

  • Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment.
  • Recognise the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background and preferred ways of communicating.

 

Delivering a quality service

  • Prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality, including participating in shared learning across the practice, PCN and wider organisation. Work as part of the team to seek feedback, continually improve the service and contribute to business planning.

 

Managing information

  • Use technology, read codes and appropriate software as an aid to planning, implementing and monitoring care, communicating information and reviewing and processing data for audit purposes.

 

Learning and development

  • Take responsibility for own learning and performance through continuous professional development, including participating in supervision, acting as a positive role model and assessing own learning needs.
  • Actively promote the workplace as a learning environment, encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from external good practice.
  • Disseminate learning and information gained to other team members in order to share good practice and inform others about current and future developments (e.g. courses and conferences).
